Tourist Tax Return
Tourists visiting the UAE can claim a refund on the 5% VAT paid on shopping under the Tax Refund for Tourists Scheme. This applies to goods purchased from retailers participating in the scheme, which are identified by a “Tax-Free” sign. To be eligible, tourists must not be residents of the UAE, and the goods must meet the minimum spend requirement set by the Federal Tax Authority (currently AED 250). Refunds can only be claimed on items intended for personal use and exported out of the country, excluding services, consumed goods, and items such as cars and real estate. Before leaving the UAE, tourists can process their VAT refund at designated kiosks located at airports, seaports, and land borders by presenting the goods, purchase receipts, and a valid passport or boarding pass.
